Gauff Cruises Past Raducanu in Straight Sets

British tennis star Raducanu’s impressive run at the Italian Open came to an end after a commanding performance by Coco Gauff, who defeated her 6-1, 6-2 in the fourth round. Gauff, currently ranked world number three, displayed her clay-court prowess with a powerful and controlled game that left little room for Raducanu to fight back.
A Milestone on Clay for Raducanu
Despite the loss, this tournament marked a breakthrough moment for Raducanu. She secured three consecutive clay-court wins—a first in her career—highlighting her growing confidence and adaptability on a surface she’s historically struggled with. Her performance in Rome signals a potential turning point ahead of the upcoming French Open, starting May 25.
Gauff Proves Her Clay Court Class
Coco Gauff, the 2022 French Open finalist and 2025 Madrid Open runner-up, reinforced her reputation as a serious contender for the Roland Garros title. Her athleticism, aggressive forehands, and court awareness kept Raducanu on the back foot throughout the match. This win marks Gauff’s second career victory over Raducanu, the first being at the 2023 Australian Open.
Coaching Changes Fuel Raducanu’s Resurgence
Raducanu has shown significant progress in recent weeks, winning eight of her last eleven matches. A large part of her resurgence is credited to her informal collaboration with coach Mark Petchey and continued support from mentor Jane O’Donoghue. The changes appear to be helping her regain confidence and rhythm after a period of inconsistent form.
A Fierce Battle for British No.1
With her performance in Rome, Raducanu inches closer to reclaiming the British number one spot. A win over Gauff would have lifted her above Katie Boulter, who suffered a first-round exit in Rome. The race is further intensified by the rise of Sonay Kartal, now ranked 59th and adding pressure to the national rankings.
